A clear, practical reference for what maths skills a typically developing 9 to 10 year old should be building, from fraction operations to early algebraic thinking.

By age nine and ten, most children are consolidating primary maths skills and beginning the transition toward the more abstract reasoning that upper primary and early secondary maths demands. Here's what's typically developing at this stage.

Fluent Multi-Digit Operations

By this stage, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with multi-digit numbers should be increasingly fluent and largely independent of concrete materials for most children, though a return to concrete tools when a new or difficult concept appears remains entirely normal and healthy, not a sign of falling behind.

Fraction and Decimal Operations

Adding, subtracting, and beginning to multiply fractions, along with an introduction to decimals and their relationship to fractions and place value, typically develops in this window, building on the earlier concrete fraction foundation.

This is typically where the checkerboard material, or the equivalent written algorithm once concrete understanding is secure, handles genuinely large multiplication problems, and long division is introduced as a formal, multi-step procedure.

Simple pattern generalisation ("if this pattern continues, what comes next?") and basic use of an unknown symbol or letter to represent a missing quantity typically begin here, laying groundwork for formal algebra in the years ahead.

Measurement, Data and Basic Geometry

Working confidently with standard units of measurement, reading and interpreting simple graphs and data, and calculating area and perimeter of basic shapes typically consolidate in this window.

Persistent reliance on concrete materials for very basic operations well past this stage, significant, disproportionate difficulty specifically with multi-step problems compared to single-step ones, or a widening gap between verbal reasoning ability and maths performance are worth a closer look.
