Elementary Maths

Fluency and problem-solving, mapped to UK, Australian, US and Cambridge frameworks, ready for whatever curriculum comes next.

By this stage, most children are working comfortably in the abstract, but for a child with dyscalculia or a related learning difference, this is often where gaps that were previously hidden by memorisation start to surface under harder material. We keep the option to return to concrete materials open for any topic, for any child, at any point.

Because our families are in Kuwait, Australia, the UK and the US, this stage is deliberately mapped across curricula rather than tied to one, so a child arrives at their local school's Year 4/5/Grade 4/5 expectations from whichever direction they're coming from.

The full year, term by term

Term 1: Multi-Digit Operations

The point where gaps hidden by memorisation in earlier years tend to surface, so we check understanding before adding speed.

  • Place value to 10,000 and beyond
  • Multi-digit multiplication: 2-digit by 2-digit, with the standard algorithm grounded in place value
  • Long division, introduced step by step with concrete backup for any child who needs it
  • Factors and multiples, and their link back to the times tables from Primary Maths
  • Diagnostic check-in: identifying exactly which foundation, if any, needs revisiting

Term 2: Fractions, Decimals and Data

The topics that most consistently separate confident maths students from anxious ones at this age.

  • Equivalent fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator
  • Introduction to decimals and their relationship to fractions and place value
  • Area and perimeter of rectangles and compound shapes
  • Reading and constructing bar graphs, pictograms and simple tables
  • Fraction and decimal word problems, applying the strategies built in Primary Maths

Term 3: Pre-Algebra, Geometry and Curriculum Readiness

Preparing a child for whatever comes next, whichever country's classroom they're heading into.

  • Early pre-algebra: unknowns, simple one-step equations, and balancing both sides
  • Geometry: angles, properties of 2D and 3D shapes, and basic coordinate grids
  • Fraction, decimal and multi-digit operations brought together in mixed problem sets
  • Curriculum-mapped review: UK KS2, Australian Curriculum, US Common Core and Cambridge Primary expectations
  • End-of-year report shared with parents, mapped to the child's next school year wherever they are in the world
