Primary Maths

Bridging concrete to abstract: place value, early operations, and rebuilding confidence for children who've started to feel behind.

This is the stage where maths starts to move from the hands to the page, and where children who needed a slower run-up at the foundation stage can start to feel like they're "behind" if that transition is rushed. We don't rush it. Materials stay on the table for as long as a child needs them, even while we introduce the written symbols and procedures alongside.

For children arriving here from a traditional classroom rather than our own foundation stage, this is often the first time someone has gone back to check whether the concrete understanding is actually there, rather than assuming it and re-teaching the same worksheet, slower.

The full year, term by term

Term 1: Place Value and Confident Addition

Re-establishing solid number sense before layering on new procedures.

  • Place value into the hundreds, with materials available for any child who needs them
  • Addition and subtraction without regrouping, checked for real understanding, not just correct answers
  • Number bonds to 10 and 20, built for instant recall rather than counting on fingers
  • Introduction to multiplication as repeated addition and equal groups
  • Telling time to the hour and half hour

Term 2: Regrouping, Times Tables and Fractions

The three topics where most children who "feel behind" actually lost their footing.

  • Addition and subtraction with regrouping, taught step by step with materials, not shortcuts
  • Multiplication tables for 2, 5 and 10, linked back to equal groups, not rote chanting alone
  • Division as sharing into equal groups
  • Fractions as equal parts: halves and quarters of shapes and sets
  • Money: recognising coins and notes, and totalling simple amounts

Term 3: Fluency and Word Problems

Bringing the year's skills together, including the word-problem strategies most children never get taught explicitly.

  • Multiplication tables extended toward 10, with division as their natural partner
  • Division with remainders, introduced concretely before it's written
  • Measurement: length, weight and capacity, with real-world estimating
  • Word-problem strategies: identifying what's actually being asked before reaching for an operation
  • Readiness check for Elementary Maths, shared with parents at year end
