Montessori Maths Materials Explained: What Each One Actually Teaches

Walk into a Montessori maths lesson and the first thing most parents notice is that there's barely a worksheet in sight. Instead there are beads, rods, and wooden boards, each one designed to teach exactly one idea before the next material takes over. Parents new to the method often ask the same question: what is each piece actually for? Here's a working guide.

Number Rods (Ages 3-4)

The number rods are ten wooden rods, each one unit longer than the last, painted in alternating red and blue segments. A child lines them up, counts the segments, and physically feels that "five" is longer than "three" before ever seeing either written down. This is the first material in the sequence: quantity, with no symbols involved at all.

Sandpaper Numerals (Ages 3-4)

Introduced alongside the rods, sandpaper numerals are wooden tiles with each digit cut from rough sandpaper. A child traces the shape with two fingers while saying the number aloud, linking three senses, sight, touch, and sound, to one symbol. This is where quantity starts meeting its written name.

Spindle Boxes (Ages 4-5)

Two boxes, compartments labelled 0 through 9, and a bundle of loose wooden spindles. The child counts out the correct number of spindles into each compartment. Zero is the quiet star of this material: it's often the first time a child concretely understands that "zero" means an empty box, not "nothing to count."

Golden Bead Material (Ages 4-6)

This is the material most people picture when they think of Montessori maths. Individual beads represent units, bars of ten beads represent tens, flat squares of one hundred beads represent hundreds, and a cube of a thousand beads represents a thousand. A child can hold a thousand-cube in one hand and immediately understand, physically, why place value matters. This single material carries a child through addition, subtraction, and eventually multiplication and division with quantities into the thousands.

Teen and Ten Boards (Ages 4-5)

The numbers 11 through 19 trip up a lot of children because English doesn't name them logically ("eleven" gives no clue it means "ten and one"). The teen boards pair a printed "10" card with loose unit beads laid alongside it, so a child builds "ten and four more" before being told it's called "fourteen." The ten boards do the same for the decade numbers, 20, 30, 40, and so on.

The Checkerboard (Ages 6-8)

By the time a child reaches multi-digit multiplication, the checkerboard takes over from the golden beads. A large chequered grid marked with place values lets a child physically lay out a multiplication like 24 x 13, placing bead quantities in the correct columns and reading the answer off the grid. Why the Order Rarely Changes

Montessori materials are sequenced deliberately, and skipping ahead usually shows up later as a gap rather than saving time now.
