Of all the maths concepts that trip up children in the first few years of school, place value is one of the most consistently underestimated by adults, precisely because it feels so obvious once you already understand it.
Why It's Genuinely Hard
Place value asks a child to accept something strange: the same digit means a completely different amount depending on where it sits. The "1" in 51 means one single unit. The "1" in 15 means ten units. Nothing about the digit itself signals this, it's entirely positional, an abstraction with no natural, everyday analogy for most young children to lean on.
The Golden Bead Solution
Montessori's answer is to make the positions physically different sizes, not just visually labelled differently. A unit is a single bead. A ten is a bar of ten beads joined together. A hundred is a flat square of one hundred beads. A thousand is a full cube. A child can hold a unit bead and a thousand cube in either hand and feel, immediately and without explanation, that these are wildly different quantities, even before understanding why.
Building Numbers Physically
From here, a child builds actual numbers by combining quantities: 2,341 becomes two thousand-cubes, three hundred-squares, four ten-bars, and one unit bead, laid out together and counted. This single, repeated act, build the number, read the number, is what eventually makes the written notation (where position alone carries meaning) feel obvious rather than arbitrary.
Why This Matters for Struggling Learners
For a child who finds this concept difficult, sometimes a sign of dyscalculia, sometimes just needing more time, the physical version isn't a nice-to-have, it's often the only version that actually lands. Explaining place value verbally to a child who hasn't built the concrete foundation tends to produce memorised rules ("just add a zero") rather than real understanding, which breaks down the moment a problem doesn't match the memorised pattern exactly.
